Self Concept - Who?

It’s an endless and scary day when you realize you don’t have a clue as to who that fill in the blank “Name_________” entry is “supposed” to be. A rude realization, indeed -a missing self concept- and that’s what happened to me some years ago.

I remember back in my thirties, how every weekend I would do an inventory of the names and numbers in my address book (dinosaur days, for sure) just to make sure I had plenty of people to call and hang out with. Self concept was “assumed” back then -was a given- simply because I fit in somewhere (or so I thought).

It was my way of making sure any time spent alone (which was none) was by choice. And this was the “in” thing -the way to be- back then. From what I can see now, it still is. Self concept be damned, once again.

Well, the old adage holds true -the faster and harder we run from something, the more we need to meet it. Forget that it’s the “in” thing, or the “out” thing.

More oftentimes than not, the “in” thing has absolutely nothing to do with what we need as individuals. And the individual needs DON’T go away; but the “in” thing do. This was indeed the coldest meeting place I’ve ever know : the realization of self with nay a clue to go on ….
